Assistance to Individuals

Individuals with disabilities and their families can face financial emergencies like anyone else, often with fewer resources. They can request financial help from The Arc of Buncombe County to cover essential expenses like rent, utilities, groceries, medications, necessary medical equipment, heating oil, and clothing. Requests can come directly from individuals or through referrals.

When we receive a request, our Community Resource Specialist evaluates it for cause, validity, and urgency. They work with other financial aid agencies to meet urgent needs, usually within 24 hours, ensuring funds go directly to vendors such as landlords or utility companies. We also offer follow-up support to help individuals and families prevent new financial crises. If the issue is due to poor financial planning or low income, the Resource Specialist arranges financial counseling sessions and refers families to local programs like On Track, Vocational Rehabilitation, or the Western Highlands Network. Additionally, we provide financial support through respite funding, summer camp scholarships, and Operation Santa.
