When I think back to my childhood summers growing up in Burke County, I’m immediately taken to Lake James…days spent fishing, walking along the shore, playing in the water, and ending with family cookouts. Those moments were simple, but they shaped my sense of connection, freedom, and joy. When you think about your own childhood summers, what comes to mind? For many of us, summer meant camp, time outdoors, and a break from routine. But for many families we serve at The Arc of Buncombe County, summer looks very different. When school ends, so do many critical supports for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Summer programs are limited, and most are not equipped to meet complex medical or behavioral needs. Families are often left piecing together care, taking time off work or relying on others to help. And yet, every child deserves the chance to experience summer in a meaningful way. Specialized camps provide safe, engaging environments where children can enjoy the same kinds of experiences many of us remember, while giving families peace of mind that their child is supported and thriving. Because of the level of care required, these programs come at a higher cost, making community support essential. As we gather for events like Spring Fling this month, we’re reminded of what’s possible when a community comes together, helping make camp scholarships and summer experiences accessible for more families.
