Three Key Updates from The Arc

As we move through summer, The Arc of Buncombe County remains focused on what matters most…our clients, our community, and our shared mission. Here are three important updates we’re excited to share:

1. Listening Session with The Arc of NC – August 14th at AB Tech

We’re partnering with The Arc of North Carolina to host a Listening Session on Wednesday, August 14th from 4–6 PM at AB Tech. This is a unique opportunity for families, self-advocates, and caregivers to meet the new CEO of The Arc of NC, share experiences, and help shape the future of services and advocacy in our state. Your voice truly matters so please join us.

2. Harvest of Hope Fundraiser is Near

Our Harvest of Hope event is coming up on September 17, and we’re working hard to make it a success. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, we’ve seen a significant rise in crisis assistance needs. This fundraiser plays a critical role in supporting our programs year-round. Whether you’re able to donate, sponsor, or help spread the word—your support makes a real difference for families in crisis. Be sure to order tickets!

3. Operation Santa Has Begun

Yes, it’s already that time—Operation Santa is underway! Planning starts early to ensure every child and adult we serve feels the joy of the holiday season. Volunteers Dee Holmes & Barbara Pettigrew- Embracing the Work of Fundraising

At The Arc of Buncombe County, our fundraising success is powered by volunteers who lead with heart - especially Dee Holmes and Barbara Pettigrew, two dedicated champions at the core of our Development Committee.

As we prepare for Harvest of Hope this September, we honor their leadership and the “why” behind their tireless work:

🌱 Ensuring Quality Care: Their efforts help sustain compassionate, person-centered services that families rely on.

💡 Leading with Innovation: In a tough fundraising year, they’re finding creative ways to keep our programs strong.

🌟 Inspiring Others: Above all, Dee and Barbara embody the spirit of service—rallying donors, sponsors, and community members with passion and purpose.

We’re incredibly grateful for their commitment and leadership. Because of them, Harvest of Hope shines brighter—and so does the future for the people we serve.

This month, we shine a light on the story of a resilient grandmother—a devoted caregiver to her two grandchildren, both of whom face ongoing medical challenges.

When she first connected with The Arc of Buncombe County, she was seeking advocacy support after Hurricane Helene had severely damaged her apartment. Though nine months had passed since the storm, she and her grandchildren were still living in the aftermath—coping with unsafe conditions and uncertainty.

As we walked alongside her, it became clear that what she needed was more than temporary relief—it was a fresh start.

Through collaboration with our community partners, The Arc helped her secure safe and stable housing, including support with security and utility deposits. But the work didn’t stop there. We helped her navigate the logistics of the physical move, ensuring a smooth transition, and most importantly, we made sure that beds were in place for her grandchildren when they arrived in their new home.

In her story, we are reminded that while we often say “it takes a village”, some situations demand even more. They require a village in action—stepping up, working together, and wrapping around families to ensure their safety, dignity, and stability.
